AWARDS AND COMPETITIONS

ROME/ATHENS SUMMER SCHOLARSHIPS:

This is a special opportunity for Club members to win scholarships of $4,500 toward the cost of study in the summer session of the American Academy in Rome or the American School of Classical Studies at Athens. All members in the third consecutive year of paid membership in the Club are eligible to apply for the award, although preference will be given to secondary school teachers and graduate students. Interested individuals should obtain applications from the Academy or School, complete them, and send copies of all application materials by March 15 to Dr. Ethyle R. Wolfe, 360 West 22nd Street, #15E, New York, NY 10011. PHYLLIS WINQUIST TUITION ASSISTANCE AWARDS: These awards are bestowed by the NYCC in honor of a master teacher, Phyllis Winquist, to support candidates who are taking courses to acquire or improve skills in teaching Latin or Ancient Greek in grades 7-12. Candidates must be paid members of the NYCC at the time of applying and during the twelve months of the funded period. They must either be teaching Classics in grades 7-12 or show clear indication of doing so in the near future. All application materials must be postmarked by March 1 and mailed directly to  Dr. Catherine Torigian, Apt,  191 31st street, Brooklyn, NY 11232.  Please contact Dr. Torigan for more information and an application for the scholarship ( (Ctorigian@browning.edu). )

The New York Classical Club Announces THE PRESIDENT’S GRANT 2008-2009

 The President’s Grant is a new award program for those interested in promoting Latin, Greek, and classical Mediterranean civilizations in general.  Awards are available for students, teachers, and administrators at all academic levels.  We also invite applications from other members who, although they may not teach, are otherwise involved in the promotion of Greek and Roman Classics in some way. COMPETITIONS: 
INFORMATION FOR SPRING 2008 CONTESTS!!

Every spring, the Club sponsors three contests to encourage and reward the study of Latin and Greek.
  1. High School Sight Translation: Students from metropolitan high schools compete in five divisions of Latin sight translations, each of which carries prizes of $100, $75, and $50.  The contest will take place on Thursday, April 3rd, at The Browning School, 52 East 62nd Street between Park and Madison.  Students should arrive between 3:20 and 3:40 (They or their teachers should also email Dr. Torigian before showing up)   There are five contest divisions:
     I = Latin I,  Caesar      II = Latin II, Cicero            III = Latin III, Ovid           IV = Latin IV, Vergil         V = Advanced, Horace and Catullus

  2. College Sight Translation: The New York Classical Club undergraduate Greek and Latin translation examinations will be held Friday April 18th, 2008, between 1:30 and 5:00 p.m., in the seminar room of the classics department of New York University, 100 Washington Square East, room 503 (enter from either Waverly Place or Washington Place).  The Greek exam will be given from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m.; the Latin from 3:15 to 4:45 p.m.  Click here for a *pdf file giving more detailed information.   3. Oral Reading Contests: Competitions in the oral reading of Latin and Greek are also held, open to high school students, undergraduates and graduate students. There are prizes of $250, $150, and $75 awarded for each language. The contest will  be held on Saturday April 5th, 2008. at 2:00 pm, at 602 Hamilton Hall, Columbia University (Main Campus Entrance on east side of Broadway and 116 St).
